Canada is known to be one of the most welcoming countries globally towards immigrants, which can be observed in its many immigration programs. One of them is the Canadian Experience Class or CEC program, which allows individuals who have at least one year’s worth of work experience in the country to immigrate permanently. The program is part of Canada’s Express Entry system, offering a faster way for people to become permanent residents and eventually citizens of the Great White North.
The Canadian government is well-aware of the many foreign talented workers within its borders that want to become permanent residents. As they can contribute further to the economy, the government has instituted various programs for these skilled individuals to settle down and enjoy long-term plans.
If you are hoping to immigrate to Canada, here is what you need to know about the CEC:
All about Express Entry
The Express Entry system enables the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) department to invite qualified candidates to apply for permanent residence in the country. These candidates must have created an online Express Entry profile and made a formal ‘Expression of Interest’ to migrate and settle in Canada. Their profiles were accepted to the Express Entry pool, given a score, then ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System, which evaluates their application by assigning points.
The Express Entry pool also contains candidates under different programs, like the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC) and the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC). The IRCC conducts periodic Express Entry draws from the pool and invites these candidates to apply at this time.
The advantages of CEC
There are many advantages of the CEC program. These candidates have at least one year of work experience in Canada, which is a significant factor under the CRS, granting them more points in their application. Since the required documentation is minimal, these applications are processed quickly, usually within three to four months. Applicants under the CEC program are also not required to show proof of settlement funds, which other candidates such as those in FSWC and FSTC must do. Proof of settlement funds has proven to be a barrier to entry for other applicants, which is why this program has a substantial advantage.
However, CEC also has a potential disadvantage. Even though an applicant is eligible to apply to the program, there is no guarantee that they will receive an invitation to apply. Additionally, their CRS score must be above the required cut-off to receive an invitation.
The eligibility criteria
To qualify for the program, applicants must fulfill a set of criteria. They must have at least 12 months of full-time or an equivalent in part-time skilled work experience within Canada in the last three years. The applicant must have obtained this experience while on a valid work permit and working in one or more occupations categorized as skill type 0, A, or B, stipulated in the National Occupational Classification. The acquired work experience can be distributed in two different NOC classifications as long as they are skilled roles and the experience was gained legally.
Applicants must also plan to live outside Quebec and fulfill the required language fluency necessitated by the job for each ability: speaking, listening, writing, and reading. These abilities can be evaluated by taking an authorized language test, such as CELPIP-General (English), IELTS-General (English), TEF (French), and TCF (French).
It is important to note that work experience acquired through self-employment or while a full-time student does not qualify as eligible under CEC.
The Canadian Experience Class has made it easier for foreign nationals with Canadian work experience to immigrate and make plans to settle permanently in the country. By learning more about the program, you can determine your eligibility and begin applying to start your new life in Canada.
