Canadian Immigration_ What You Can Look Forward to in 2021

Similar to every other country in the world, Canada has also been greatly affected by the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. And just like last year, we expect that it will still affect Canadian immigration in 2021. However, there is now a silver lining that offers hope to many people.

Canada aims to successfully vaccinate those who want the immunization by September. In fact, it started the vaccination campaign in December – the widest in history.  If everything goes as planned, the possibility of the country’s immigration system going back to normal is huge.

When the situation in the Great White North resumes to the way things were before, you can expect the following events to roll out:

Travel Restrictions Lifted

Canada has implemented strict travel restrictions from the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected newcomers’ inflow. Yet, this is the same situation for almost every other country. Once these restrictions are lifted, though, Canada aims to welcome immigrants again, especially in an effort to boost the country’s economy as well.

Parents and Grandparents Program Resumed

It has already been confirmed by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that the Parents and Grandparents Program lottery that was supposed to be held in 2020 will happen early this year. It may even happen as early as January. The IRCC will allow up to 10,000 applicants to take their parents and grandparents to the country. There have also been talks of having another PGP lottery towards the end of 2021 with invitations for up to 30,000 applications. So if you’re considering having your parents or live with you in Canada, this may be your chance to do so!

Special Pathways for Citizens of Hong Kong Placed

Hong Kong citizens who wish to work in Canada will have a higher chance as there will be two pathways for them. These pathways aim to make it easier for Hong Kong citizens to secure either a work permit for three years or a permanent residency. Those who have completed a degree in a reputable university in Hong Kong can also move to the country by applying for a work visa.

Focus on Economic Programs Heightened

It is anticipated that there will be a higher demand for skilled labourers in the next three years. The focus will be on Agri-Food Pilot, Francophone Immigration, and Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot to meet this demand. Employers are also encouraged to consider Global Skills Strategy schemes to have qualified foreign talent in the country quickly. This move will ultimately help the country gain the losses suffered over the past year.

Immigration Levels Plan Implemented

The IRCC’s goal is to have 401,000 new permanent residents this year. After that, they’re looking forward to having 10,000 more each year for 2022 and 2023. If this happens, this will be the highest immigration levels in Canada’s history. This is especially good news for those who are planning to seek a better life!

Immigration might have taken a halt in 2020 due to the pandemic. But if things go according to the government’s plan, there should be no reason why things can pick up again in 2021. With the events you can look forward to this year, it’s the perfect time for you to seize the opportunity and proceed with your application.
