Given the incredible number of restrictions the COVID-19 pandemic has caused this year, the Canadian government has formulated a new response regarding its immigration plan. Worldwide lockdowns have halted immigration applications, as access to processes such as English testing was temporarily paused to comply with safety regulations. As the country is famous for welcoming immigrants to further its economy, it will open its doors to over 1.2 million immigrants from 2021 to 2023.
The Immigration and Refugee Council of Canada (IRCC) plans to award permanent residency to over 400,000 immigrants each year until 2023, starting at 401,000 for 2021 and increasing the number by 10,000. As the country is home to one of the oldest populations and the lowest birth rates, the government is keen on inviting skilled and diligent foreigners to make Canada their new home.
Immigrating to Canada
The government has yet to release the numbers assigned to its many immigration programs, but there is good news in the pipeline. In fact, approximately 60 percent of its annual target allocation is towards economic immigration programs and economic class programs. The Express Entry System is also expected to take most of the Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency.
Other programs have successfully attracted immigrants of various skill levels to the country, such as the Atlantic Immigration Pilot, providing more opportunities for foreigners to immigrate. The stream that issues you an ITA depends on where you want to live and your desired occupation, so here are two immigration programs to consider:
The Express Entry System
Canada’s primary economic migration program is the Express Entry System, which is a mixture of various programs. The system offers skilled foreigners an invitation to apply for permanent residency in as little as six months from the time they submit their application. It’s highly competitive and uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score to invite candidates, so you’ll need to make sure you get the highest number of points possible to apply for permanent residency.
Fortunately, you don’t need an existing job offer in Canada to merit an ITA, although receiving one will vastly improve your chances of earning the invitation. You’ll have to create a profile and fill out information related to your qualifications, work experience, language proficiencies, and other factors to enter the system. It will then enter your profile into one of three pools with other candidates. If your score is high enough, the system will select you and issue an ITA. When you receive an ITA, you will then provide the required documents, after which the government will award you permanent residency.
The three pools you will enter into are the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canada Experience Class. The first program is for managerial, professional, or technical positions, such as an accountant, lawyer, or architect. The second program is for qualified tradespeople with at least two years of experience, like chefs or plumbers. The third program is for those with at least a year of work experience in Canada under any of the categories mentioned above.
The Atlantic Immigration Pilot
However, if you aren’t eligible for the Express Entry System or didn’t receive a high enough CRS score, you can opt for other pilot programs, like the Provincial Nominee Program. It allows semi-skilled foreign workers to work in Canada through job offers, allowing them to become permanent residents.
An example of this program is the Atlantic Immigration Pilot or AIP, which has three programs. The Atlantic International Graduate Program is for those who have graduated from a post-secondary institution in one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces. The second one, the Atlantic High Skilled Program, is for those with a job offer and at least a year’s worth of work experience in a managerial, professional, or skilled trade job. The last one, the Atlantic Intermediate Skilled Program, is for those who require a job offer in a semi-skilled position that needs on-the-job training.
Canada has many programs that allow numerous opportunities for foreigners of various skill levels to immigrate to the country. The government recognizes that potential manifests in multiple forms, so they created different avenues to accommodate international citizens of all backgrounds and lifestyles. With so many programs to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect one for you.
