Canada is a popular destination for international students, thanks to its high-quality education system and welcoming atmosphere. One of the major benefits for international students in Canada is the opportunity to work after graduation through the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. This blog will guide you through the process of applying for a PGWP, ensuring you understand all the steps and requirements.

What is a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?

A Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have graduated from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada to work in the country for up to three years. The length of the work permit depends on the duration of the study program completed. The PGWP is an excellent opportunity to gain Canadian work experience, which can be a stepping stone towards permanent residency.

Eligibility Criteria for PGWP

Before applying for a PGWP, ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Graduation from a DLI (Designated Learning Institutions): You must have completed a study program at a designated learning institution in Canada. You can check if your college is DLI or not here
  2. Program Duration: Your study program must have been at least eight months long.
  3. Full-time Student: You should have maintained full-time student status during each academic session of your program, except for the final session, which can be part-time.
  4. Valid Study Permit: You must have a valid study permit when you apply for your PGWP.

When to Apply for a PGWP

It is crucial to apply for your PGWP within 180 days (approximately six months) of receiving your final marks or the confirmation of graduation from your institution. Applying within this time frame ensures you remain eligible for the work permit.

Steps to Apply for a PGWP

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you apply for a PGWP:

  1. Gather Required Documents: Before starting your application, make sure you have all the necessary documents, including:some text
    • A valid passport
    • Your study permit
    • An official letter from your DLI confirming you've completed your program
    • An official transcript from your DLI or a copy of your final transcript
  2. Create an Account on IRCC Portal: To apply for a PGWP, you need to create an account on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. This is where you will submit your application and track its status.
  3. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the application form (IMM 5710) for a work permit. Make sure to provide accurate and complete information to avoid delays or rejections.
  4. Pay the Fees: The application fee for a PGWP is CAD 255. This includes the work permit fee and the open work permit holder fee. You can pay this online through the IRCC portal.
  5. Submit Your Application: Once you have completed the application form and paid the fees, submit your application through the IRCC portal. You will receive a confirmation email with your application number.
  6. Wait for Processing: The processing time for a PGWP can vary, but it typically takes around 80 to 100 days. During this time, you can track the status of your application through the IRCC portal.
  7. Receive Your PGWP: If your application is approved, you will receive your PGWP by mail. Make sure to review the permit for any errors and contact IRCC immediately if you find any.

Tips for a Successful PGWP Application

  • Apply Early: Don’t wait until the last minute to apply for your PGWP. Start gathering your documents and filling out the application as soon as you receive your final marks or confirmation of graduation.
  • Check Your Documents: Ensure all your documents are up to date and accurate. Any discrepancies can lead to delays or rejection.
  • Follow Up: If you haven’t heard back from IRCC within the typical processing time, don’t hesitate to follow up. You can contact IRCC through their helpline or web form.

Working While Waiting for PGWP Approval

If you apply for a PGWP before your study permit expires, you can work full-time while waiting for a decision on your application. This is a great opportunity to start gaining Canadian work experience right away.

Conclusion

Applying for a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada can be a straightforward process if you understand the requirements and follow the steps carefully. This work permit is a valuable opportunity for international graduates to gain work experience and potentially transition to permanent residency in Canada. By planning ahead and ensuring your application is complete, you can set yourself up for success in the Canadian job market.
